ILOG JViews Charts 8.1

Released in November, 2007, ILOG JViews Charts 8.1 adds the source code for all interactors and boasts a variety of new performance features. ILOG JViews Charts 8.1 requires Java Platform, Standard Edition, version 5.0 or later.

Interactor source code
The ILOG JViews Charts advanced programming interface (API) includes a number of interactor objects for the control of mouse and keyboard events. This well-documented API is typically adequate for developers who wish to create extensions. To accelerate the understanding of the underlying process, ILOG JViews Charts 8.1 provides the full source code for all of the interactors. A new sample illustrates how to use the source code when writing a new custom derivative.

Performance enhancements
ILOG JViews Charts 8.1 provides the following performance enhancements:

  • Improved styling
ILOG JViews Charts 8.1 provides performance improvements to Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). Further enhancements have been made to CSS execution and expression evaluation.
  • Enhanced base level drawing operations
Many base level drawing operations have been enhanced. Display repainting where frequent updates (i.e., ten updates per second) are required is faster, as is label drawing.
  • Faster applet-based deployment
The number of roundtrips to the server upon startup has been substantially reduced by approximately 25 to 50 percent when using an applet, because of improved BeanInfo and resource bundle loading.

Chart integration with ILOG JViews Diagrammer
ILOG JViews Charts can easily be added to dashboard (and if desired, diagram) displays. For more information, please read the latest version of ILOG JViews Diagrammer.

Previous Release

ILOG JViews Charts 8.0
ILOG JViews 8.0 was released in December, 2006. This version offers additions to Rich Web Charts and portlet support.

More rich client chart displays
With the release of ILOG JViews Charts 7.5 in May 2006, ILOG introduced a new generation of advanced Web displays that leveraged Asynchronous JavaScript and XML (Ajax) concepts. These charts included both DHTML and scalable vector graphics (SVG) solutions, and offered features such as incremental screen updates and advanced interactions.

This functionality is commonplace in desktop charting applications, but until the advent of Ajax and products like ILOG JViews Charts, it required special plug-ins for Web browsers. ILOG JViews Charts 8.0 provides enhanced Rich Web Charts—Ajax charts that offer an SVG-based solution, requiring less server computing power and network bandwidth resources—with the addition of pie, area, hi-low, stair and bubble charts, in addition to its standard line and bar charts.

Portlet support
ILOG JViews Charts 8.0 has an integrated application programming interface (API) with portlet containers, allowing ILOG JViews developers to deploy within portals.

Note: This feature requires the use of portlet containers that support the JSR 168 reference implementation, such as Pluto. An integration example will be included in the product, along with a complete Pluto installation so the portlet samples can be executed.

Portals are popular because they allow browser displays to mix information from a variety of sources. Displays can be configured by end users to show their preferred information, and can include both textual and graphical information. Because ILOG JViews 8.0 supports this feature, Web developers can make any JViews display—a chart, a diagram or a schedule—viewable as a portlet inside a portal.
