Business
Dillinger H�tte GTS produces and supplies heavy steel plates for the offshore oil-and-gas industry. Applications include structural pipes, offshore structures, risers, pipelines, steel construction, shipbuilding, boilers, pressure vessels, rail cars, machines, construction equipment and mining. Operations also encompass plastic molds and protection systems.
Goal
Each month Dillinger H�tte produces about 50,000 customized steel plates of differing sizes, surfaces, coatings and alloys. Meeting customer specifications requires about 1,400 production plans and coordinating up to 1.5 million production steps. The company needed to streamline production planning to allow for immediate response to changes in customer needs and business conditions.
Application
Dillinger H�tte employed ILOG JRules to implement production plans. A new application called Buchungsserver incorporated JRules to adjust and fine-tune processes and production steps in real time at 16 production lines. The solution expedited response to changes in orders, supplies and production resources.
Results
Developing a more flexible production process enables Dillinger H�tte to execute changes within hours rather than weeks. Greater production agility facilitates production planning and adjustments when steel plates fail quality assurance tests. The solution improves product quality while shortening overall production time.
Technical
Before ILOG JRules, complex rules for steel production were hard-coded within a proprietary system that could take weeks to implement. Dillinger H�tte adopted ILOG JRules as part of a larger initiative to move from a proprietary FORTRAN-based IT environment to a Java environment. Dillinger H�tte also uses ILOG CPLEX in production planning.
