ILOG turns 20
By Pierre Haren, ILOG Chairman and CEO
Twenty years is a great milestone for any company, but an even greater one for software companies, which operate in the fastest-changing business environment of all.
Twenty years ago, workstations were the rage, PC computing power was minuscule, Xerox and Apple were bringing bitmap displays to the masses, and departmental servers from DEC and Data General were starting to replace mainframes. Object-oriented programming had barely left the research lab when Fortune magazine announced the new technology would be delivered through LISP machines from Xerox or Symbolics. ILOG was created in this world, with the goal to inject the great ideas of artificial intelligence into the world of software development, hence the name “Intelligence Logicielle,” shortened to ILOG.
We are still at it 20 years later, having picked up some serious mathematical algorithms along the way, survived the winter of AI, migrated from LISP to C++ and then C++ to Java, and adopted the emerging C# and Microsoft .NET platform. Our core competences – business rules, optimization and visualization – have remained the same since our second year of business. With great pride, we are witnessing a rapidly growing demand for ILOG products that embed these competences: real-time network displays, BPM modeling and displays of moving objects on maps with our visualization products; automated business policies at hundreds of customer sites with our business rule management systems; and optimized operations in banking, manufacturing and transportation with our optimization products.
And now, with great excitement, we enter the supply chain management market with technologies for network design, short-term scheduling, inventory optimization and truck routing through our products and those of newly acquired LogicTools. Throughout the years we have been constantly supported by enthusiastic users, many of whom trusted their careers to our software. We cannot thank them enough, nor our thousands of investors and hundreds of partners around the world.
ILOG is a permanent adventure, with remarkable employees willing to take on the toughest challenges, and who possess a constant desire to make the world a better place. Imagine with us what the next 20 years will bring!
